We are so proud to feature our September guest speaker, Cara Rossi, the Town of Ashland’s new Police Chief.
If you heard the sound of a glass ceiling shattering on July 5, 2022, it was due to another historic moment in time. Natick Police Lt. Cara Rossi was sworn in as the new Chief of Police for the Town of Ashland.
There are over 3,685 chiefs of police currently employed in the United States, and 8.3% of all chiefs of police are women, while 91.7% are men.
In January 1994, Cara Rossi and two other women joined the Natick Police Department, a rarity in MetroWest at the time. Male coworkers weren’t used to them and the public did not know what to make of the new female officers when they hit the streets. Becoming a police officer, particularly a generation ago, could be intimidating for a woman because she was frequently the only female officer on duty.
Rossi was with the Natick Police Department for 28 years. She served in different capacities from patrol officer, patrol Sargeant, and as the Lieutenant and the Commander of the Operations Division for the last 11 years. Only 1% of police women reach the command staff level position.
In her capacity as a Lieutenant, she wore many hats but her proudest work has been both with Natick 180 and the Opioid Task Force. She is also proud for creating the Empower, Mentoring, and Supporting Women in Law Enforcement seminars, for which she received the Massachusetts Association of Women in Law Enforcement Mentoring Award in 2018.
